Mapathe Diop Workshops

Rhythm Traders and Keys, Beats, Bars have joined forces to bring you a weekend of special drumming focusing on rhythms from Senegal, West Africa with Master Drummer Mapathe Diop. Mapathe will be teaching rhythms using Sabar, Dun Dun, and Djembe drums. He will teach the "how to" aspects of each rhythm as well as to convey the cultural context and history in this fun and supportive format. Disability Affirmative.

Mapathe will teach two Portland workshops (Dec. 3^rd). One is designed for youth and young adults and thanks to our sponsors, is FREE for those 25 and under. Share the link and spread the word!! This is followed by a Sabar and Dun Dun workshop, open to the general public. The Eugene (Dec.2^nd) workshop is open to all ages and abilities.

Mapathé Diop is a Master Drummer from Dakar, Senegal, West Africa.  Mapathé has drummed his entire life, having been born to a hereditary caste of griot entertainers among the Wolof people where he performed regularly at traditional ceremonies. Since arriving in the United States in 1992, he has taught and frequently performed in the Seattle area and generally throughout the West Coast.  His relaxed and thorough teaching approach facilitates the learning of traditional Senegalese rhythms of Wolof, Serer, Lebou, Laubé and Walo people.

Portland Young Adult Drumming Workshop with Mapathe Diop from Senegal! Dec. 3 3:30 p.m.- 4:45 p.m.  Though this class if student focused, all ages are welcome especially if you are new to Senegalese rhythms or want to take both Portland workshops. Drums can be provided but please bring yours if you have a Djembe, Dun Dun or Sabar drum. Please register here even if you are attending free so that we can be sure to have space for you. $25/ Free for participants under 25.
