NAMM 2010 UPDATE:

For those of you who don't know what NAMM is, the National Association of Music Merchants has their annual trade show every year in Anaheim, CA. This is where artists, stores, and manufacturers all get together and new products are displayed and demonstrated.

There are a ton of artists running around, but I guess we all tend to look for our own heroes. We spotted Jesus Diaz, Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Liberty DeVito, Clayton Cameron, Alex Acuna, Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett, Sheila E., Karl Perazzo, Poncho Sanchez, and many, many other major musical influences.

Gon Bops, "Mariano" Series NAMM 2010
The big news of the show, at least for us, is that Gon Bops has been purchased by Sabian . They will continue to make California Series congas at the DW headquarters in Oxnard, California, while all other operations will be moving to Boston. Expect to see lots of innovation, new products, and collaboration between Gon Bops and Sabian artists.

Speaking of new Gon Bops products, we loved that they brought back the Mariano series!

Check out Gon Bops new conga feet...designed to fit any brand to lift the drum off of the ground just enough to increase the volume while bringing out more bass and tone. We'll let you know when they are in stock.

LP's top-tuning hardware
The new top-tuning hardware system on LP Congas was cool.
And good things often come in small packages. Some great things we saw were the new one-handed tambourine with clave by LP called Percusso... which won the Best in Show 2010.

LP also had a new one-handed triangle and the new 3-stem Gajate bracket. All three of these percussion toys are great. You gotta play them to believe it!

At NAMM, there were beautiful drum sets by Brady, Whitney Drums, and Craviotto.

Some of the industry buzz was about Pearl's new E-Pro live electronic drums that look like, and can be converted into, an acoustic kit. Those will be shipping later this spring.

We will also be getting the new Roland Octopad sampler, the Yamaha Rock Tour kits, and lots of other goodies coming to the Traders daily.

CRAZY KIT OF THE SHOW

The "Crazy Kit of the Show" is always hard to choose, but check out this Ludwig Classic Maple kit.
Any married drummer who brings this home to the living room will surely be out on the streets in a heartbeat. Consider yourself warned.

Ludwig's Crazy Drum Set

In terms of Djembe drums, there was hardly a playable instrument in the entire convention center at NAMM. Some were pretty ugly.

Some were HUGE (could this be the world's tallest djembe?....Brad is 6 feet tall by the way)

But I have to say that the designs on the new Meinl Professional Djembe knocked our socks off.

SARGE'S DRUM CORNER...

Korg Wave Drum
We just got in the new Korg Wave Drum....stop on by the shop and take it for a spin if you can!
Stanton Moore gave an amazing demonstration and clinic to more than 150 this past weekend at Rhythm Traders. He was gracious enough to squeeze a clinic in between his sound check and performance with Galactic that night here in Portland.

He wowed us with his street beats, and talked a lot about the history of these beats from the 2nd line Louisiana drummers to James Brown to the present. He demonstrated his techniques and knowledge about grip, tuning, and coolest of all, how he integrates a thundering Pandeiro into his set-up.

For those who purchased a VIP ticket to the clinic, they were treated to a front-row seat, as well as a bag of goods that included an assortment of Puresound wires, heads, LP shakers and cowbells, hats, and t-shirts. Quite the bargain at only $20.00 per ticket!

THE LATIN QUARTER...

We were proud to welcome Luis Conte for the 3rd time here to Rhythm Traders. In this clinic and demonstration, he showed us some new conga techniques and even surprised us by playing three bata drums at once. Luis demonstrated Roland's Handsonic, which he uses when playing for "Dancing with the Stars". He finished up the clinic by bring up local players...Miguel Bernal, Carmelo Torres, and Vicente Elejarde...for a Portland-style guaguanco.
